BREAKING NEWS: The Reds Gets Groundbreaking News Involving Nike Martinez

Nick Martinez is set to play a clear role as a starting pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds in 2025, a shift from his previous Swiss Army knife duties as a versatile arm. Manager Terry Francona confirmed on Sunday that the team sees Martinez firmly as a starter, emphasizing stability over role-switching unless necessary.

Martinez’s performance and contract support this decision. After accepting the Reds’ $21.05 million qualifying offer, the 34-year-old right-hander is making starter’s money. His 2024 season also showcased his ability in the role—posting a 3.10 ERA and 4.0 bWAR over 42 appearances (16 starts). When given a full-time starting opportunity from August 5 onward, he thrived, recording a 2.42 ERA in 11 starts, including an 0.83 ERA over his final five outings.

In his spring debut against the Giants on Sunday, Martinez pitched two scoreless innings, allowing two hits while striking out three. He threw 26 of his 35 pitches for strikes, demonstrating sharp command. His strong first inning featured three strikeouts, including a backdoor cutter to Mike Yastrzemski and a high fastball past Jerar Encarnacion.

Francona praised Martinez’s professionalism and attention to detail, noting his ability to control the running game and execute pitches with precision. Martinez, in turn, expressed enthusiasm for his role, stating he prefers starting but remains open to helping the team in any capacity if needed.

With a well-defined role in Cincinnati’s rotation, Martinez is poised to make a significant impact in 2025.

News and notes

The Cincinnati Reds are prioritizing defensive versatility this spring, giving Rule 5 pick Cooper Bowman an extended look at multiple positions. After playing first base for the first time on Saturday against the Brewers, Bowman started in left field on Sunday. The 25-year-old is primarily a middle infielder and center fielder but has a strong defensive reputation and impressive speed, stealing 43 bases across Double-A and Triple-A last season.

Manager Terry Francona emphasized the importance of Bowman’s versatility, stating, “The more versatile he is, the better.” Despite never playing first base before, Bowman embraced the challenge, telling Francona he was ready after just a few days of work. Though he went 0-for-2 on Sunday and is hitless in five at-bats so far, his defensive adaptability could be key to making the roster.

In other Reds updates:

  • Andrew Abbott (left shoulder strain) has yet to face live hitters and missed two days with an illness but returned to camp Sunday. The team is evaluating how the time off affected him.
  • Spencer Steer (right shoulder issue) is scheduled to resume throwing on Monday.

The Reds are carefully managing injuries while evaluating players who could bring much-needed defensive flexibility in 2025.
