The New York Rangers have called up top prospect Brennan Othmann to provide additional forward depth in case veteran Chris Kreider is unable to play against the Islanders on Tuesday due to injury.
The team announced the move on Monday as part of a series of roster adjustments.
Othmann, 22, was selected by the Rangers in the first round of the 2021 draft and has recorded 12 goals and eight assists in 27 AHL games this season. He is still seeking his first NHL point after appearing in three games on Jan. 4, 6, and 8, 2024.
Kreider, the team’s second-leading goal scorer with 17, was a late scratch on Sunday in Pittsburgh due to an upper-body injury, despite participating in warmups. Head coach Peter Laviolette described his status as day-to-day but did not specify whether the injury occurred during the 4 Nations Face-Off or the Rangers’ game on Saturday.
Additionally, New York recalled defenseman Zac Jones from his AHL conditioning stint while sending fellow blueliner Matthew Robertson back to Hartford. Jones, 24, has played in 28 games this season, averaging just over 16 minutes of ice time.
The Rangers are currently two points behind the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference with 25 games remaining in the season. Through 57 games, they remain in the playoff hunt.
On Sunday, they bounced back from an 8-2 loss to Buffalo by rallying to defeat the Penguins 5-3.
