HUGE BOOST: The Avalanche Confirms Return Of Another Highly Experience Star

DENVER — Valeri Nichushkin is set to rejoin the Colorado Avalanche lineup after nearly two months away due to a lower-body injury.

The forward aims to energize an Avalanche offense that has struggled, scoring just two goals in consecutive losses since returning from the break for the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament.

Nichushkin last played on Dec. 31, making this game against the New Jersey Devils his long-awaited return.

“You can’t underestimate his value to this team,” defenseman Cale Makar said after the morning skate. “It’s a huge boost for us. Hopefully, he’s back in top form—he’s looked sharp out there.”

Head coach Jared Bednar confirmed there will be no restrictions on Nichushkin’s ice time, and he will also contribute to special teams.

Before his injury, the 29-year-old forward recorded 11 goals and six assists in 21 games. He had already missed the first 17 games of the season due to a suspension last May, when he was placed in Stage 3 of the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program.

With Nichushkin in the lineup, Colorado has a 209-74-27 record.

“When it comes to power forwards, he’s arguably the best in the world,” said forward Logan O’Connor. “Having his size and skill back in the lineup is a huge asset for us.”

At 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds, Nichushkin can provide a physical presence in front of the net—an area where Colorado has struggled, especially in the absence of captain Gabriel Landeskog, who hasn’t played since the team’s 2022 Stanley Cup victory due to a persistent knee injury.

“There’s so much he brings with his size and strength,” forward Jonathan Drouin added. “He’s a force, and we need him.”
