The St. Louis Cardinals appear to be entering a rebuilding phase, which started with the front office allowing several veteran players to leave in free agency. This process could continue, as the team has multiple potential trade candidates, including right-hander Erick Fedde. A trade deadline acquisition by the Cardinals last year, Fedde is now in the final year of his contract, making him a likely trade piece.

Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report recently predicted that St. Louis would trade Fedde to the Cleveland Guardians before the 2025 MLB trade deadline. “Fedde Ends Season With: Cleveland Guardians. Ideally, he’ll go to the Reds for a ‘Fedde-Cincy Alfredo’ headline,” Miller joked. “But if the Guardians are anywhere close to a playoff spot at the deadline, getting back Shane Bieber from Tommy John surgery and adding an inexpensive arm like Fedde’s could anchor a late push, as this is presently one of the bleakest rotations.”

What could a 2021 St. Louis Cardinals playoff roster look like?

The Guardians have a strong bullpen but lack a reliable starting rotation, making Fedde a potential target. While he isn’t an ace like Dylan Cease or Luis Castillo, he is a more affordable option for Cleveland. Rather than giving up significant prospect capital for a high-profile pitcher, acquiring Fedde would be a lower-risk move—though with a more limited upside.
