The St. Louis Cardinals have reportedly explored trading third baseman Nolan Arenado this offseason, but his no-trade clause gives him control over his potential destination. Arenado has approved a trade to six teams—the Padres, Angels, Dodgers, Phillies, Mets, and Red Sox—but no deal has come close to materializing. As a result, the Cardinals are beginning to accept the likelihood that he will remain with the team for the 2025 season.
According to FanSided MLB insider Robert Murray, the trade market for infielders remains weak, making a deal unlikely. “Holding onto Arenado, while predictable, is an organizational failure by the Cardinals,” Murray wrote. He noted that by publicly entertaining trade talks, the team created an awkward situation, yet Arenado has handled it professionally and is prepared to play in St. Louis.
The Cardinals had hoped to move Arenado to shed salary and create opportunities for younger players, but his expected return in 2025 delays that transition. However, circumstances could still change. If a team on Arenado’s approved list loses a third baseman to injury, St. Louis might have an opening to revisit trade talks. Additionally, if he expands his list to include teams like the Yankees, a deal could come together quickly.
For now, though, all signs point to Arenado remaining a Cardinal for at least the upcoming season.
