GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The Reds made their first round of roster cuts this spring on Wednesday, sending seven players to Minor League camp. Among them were three MLB Pipeline Top 100 prospects: Chase Burns (No. 26), Cam Collier (No. 90), and Edwin Arroyo (No. 91). With these moves, the team now has 54 players remaining in Major League camp.

Along with Collier and Arroyo, right-hander Jose Acuna, catcher Michael Trautwein, outfielder Hector Rodriguez, and infielder/outfielder Ivan Johnson were also reassigned.

Burns was sent down after an impressive outing in Wednesday’s 5-3 loss to the Rangers, where he pitched a scoreless inning, striking out three and allowing one walk on 18 pitches. The 22-year-old, who played college baseball at Wake Forest, was selected by the Reds as the No. 2 overall pick in last year’s draft.

Collier played 119 games for High-A Dayton last season, posting a .248/.355/.443 slash line with a .798 OPS, 20 home runs, and 74 RBIs. The corner infielder injured his finger on a tag play at first base earlier in the week and is scheduled to see a medical specialist on Thursday, according to Terry Francona.

Arroyo was part of the Reds’ 2022 Trade Deadline deal with the Mariners, which also brought in prospects Noelvi Marte, Andrew Moore, and Levi Stoudt in exchange for Luis Castillo. Though Arroyo missed the 2024 season due to a torn labrum, he has already impressed Francona.

“Arroyo missed a lot of baseball, but the moment he puts on a glove, you can see how natural and athletic he is,” Francona said. “He’s a switch-hitter and one of the first guys at the ballpark. I told him to enjoy being 21 and focus on improving because young players sometimes get so caught up in reaching the big leagues that they forget to enjoy the journey.”

Despite not playing during the regular season, Arroyo appeared in 18 Arizona Fall League games, hitting .253/.309/.333 with a .642 OPS for the Glendale Desert Dogs. He shared the experience with Reds players Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Matt McLain, who were also rehabbing injuries.

Acuna also played in the AFL, pitching in four games and recording a 2.77 ERA with a 1.000 WHIP over 13 innings. His strong performance earned him a spot in the Arizona Fall Stars Game alongside Arroyo. However, he struggled after reaching Triple-A last season, posting a 9.95 ERA in four games.

Rodriguez, the Reds’ No. 11 prospect, hit .274/.309/.420 with a .729 OPS in 125 games for High-A Dayton. Johnson had an impressive stint in Triple-A, slashing .289/.359/.537 with an .896 OPS over 47 games while playing second base and corner outfield. Trautwein also reached Triple-A, where he hit .192/.270/.365 with a .635 OPS in 77 games.
