The Atlanta Braves are expected to be without their All-Star catcher, Sean Murphy, for several weeks as the 30-year-old recovers from a cracked rib. Given how physically demanding the catcher position is, it remains uncertain when Murphy will be able to return to action. So far, the Braves haven’t made a move to bring in a replacement, but there’s still time if they choose to do so.
Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer recently predicted that Atlanta might sign veteran catcher James McCann, who spent last season with the Baltimore Orioles. According to Spotrac, McCann is projected to land a free-agent deal worth around $3 million. Rymer noted that while both Yasmani Grandal and McCann are still serviceable options, Grandal reportedly declined an offer from Atlanta, leaving McCann as a logical fit. “Grandal and McCann still look like semi-viable backstops,” Rymer wrote. “Grandal is known for his framing skills and some power, while McCann’s .667 OPS with Baltimore in 2024 was respectable for a catcher. Bold prediction: The Braves sign McCann and keep him for the full season.”
McCann, 34, hit .234 with a .279 on-base percentage and a .388 slugging percentage last season, adding eight homers and nine doubles over 65 games. He remains unsigned and could likely be brought in for under $5 million.
With Murphy sidelined, the Braves need to strengthen their depth behind the plate. Although prospect Drake Baldwin is close to being big-league ready, rushing him could hinder his development. Signing a veteran like McCann would give the Braves stability at catcher until Murphy returns.
