The Patriots made a modest move to address their offensive line concerns on Friday.
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Media, veteran lineman Wes Schweitzer is expected to sign a one-year contract with New England.
While Schweitzer isn’t a cure-all for the Patriots’ offensive line woes, he does bring valuable versatility. The 31-year-old has experience at all three interior positions and has made 62 career starts during his time with the Atlanta Falcons, Washington Commanders, and most recently, the New York Jets. In New York, he worked alongside current Patriots wide receivers coach Todd Downing.
New England still has plenty of work to do to solidify the offensive line. Schweitzer primarily plays on the interior and filled in as a starting center for Washington in 2022. He could be in the mix to compete with Ben Brown and Cole Strange following the team’s decision to part ways with longtime center David Andrews.
While it’s not a headline-grabbing signing, adding Schweitzer gives the Patriots some much-needed depth. Hard to complain about that.
