Alex Young

The Cincinnati Reds made a roster move today, reassigning left-handed reliever Alex Young to minor league camp. With this move, the Reds now have 38 players remaining in major league spring training. However, several of those players are not expected to be ready by Opening Day, so the actual number competing for spots on the 26-man roster is considerably smaller.

Alex Young saw limited time with the Reds’ big league club last season, spending most of his 2024 campaign with Triple-A Louisville. He made three appearances for Cincinnati between May 28th and June 1st but spent the bulk of the year pitching in 23 games for the Louisville Bats, where he posted an impressive 1.19 ERA. In his 2.0 innings for the Reds, he didn’t allow a run. Despite his solid performance, the Reds couldn’t fit him into their bullpen plans and traded him to the San Francisco Giants for Austin Slater on July 7th. Less than two weeks later, he was claimed off waivers by the New York Mets, where he threw 13.2 innings and recorded a 3.29 ERA.

This spring, Young has appeared in just three major league spring training games. He pitched a scoreless inning against Milwaukee on February 22nd. His next outing came on March 4th, when he gave up two runs in an inning against Colorado. Eight days ago, in what appears to be his final spring appearance for now, he surrendered four runs in an inning against Arizona. Altogether, Young allowed six runs over 3.0 innings this spring, giving up six hits, hitting one batter, and walking another.
