After nearly a full calendar year away from Major League Baseball, Atlanta Braves ace Spencer Strider is officially set to make his highly anticipated return to the mound. The flame-throwing right-hander, who underwent surgery last spring to repair a torn UCL, has completed his rehabilitation and is scheduled to start for the Braves this upcoming weekend.

Strider’s comeback marks a significant milestone for both him and the Braves organization. The 26-year-old was sidelined early in the 2024 season after experiencing discomfort in his pitching elbow, which ultimately led to the decision for reconstructive surgery. Now, after months of intense physical therapy and a gradual throwing program, Strider says he’s ready.

“I feel strong. I feel confident,” Strider told reporters following his final rehab outing with Triple-A Gwinnett. “This has been a long process, but I had a lot of great people around me who made sure I came back better than ever.”

Strider was electric in his last minor league start, touching 99 mph on the radar gun and striking out seven over four innings. Braves manager Brian Snitker said the team is optimistic about what Strider can bring to the rotation as they push for another deep playoff run.

“It’s huge for us,” Snitker said. “When you get a guy like Spencer back, it’s like making a blockbuster trade midseason. We’re excited to see him out there competing.”

Braves place Spencer Strider on injured list, ending his regular season

Before the injury, Strider had established himself as one of the premier pitchers in baseball. In 2023, he led the majors with 281 strikeouts, posting a 3.18 ERA over 186 innings. His dominant fastball-slider combination made him a nightmare for opposing hitters and a key piece of Atlanta’s success.

Strider’s return couldn’t come at a better time. The Braves, currently sitting atop the NL East standings, have dealt with injuries to their starting rotation early this season. His presence at the front of the staff will be a welcome boost as they navigate a challenging stretch of the schedule.

Fans at Truist Park are expected to pack the stands this Saturday when Strider toes the rubber for the first time since April 2024. For Strider, it’s a moment he’s been visualizing since the day he went under the knife.

“It’s going to be special,” Strider said. “I can’t wait to get back out there and do what I love.”
