The Atlanta Braves are adding a former All-Star catcher to their roster.
Multiple reports on Monday confirmed that the Braves are signing James McCann to a minor league deal. McCann had not participated in spring training with any team.
With less than two weeks remaining before Atlanta’s season opener, the 34-year-old is expected to begin with the Braves’ Triple-A affiliate to prepare for game action.
McCann could potentially move from the minors to the Braves’ starting lineup shortly after the season begins. Atlanta’s projected starting catcher, Sean Murphy, sustained a broken rib during spring training, which may keep him out for up to six weeks.
The Braves also saw longtime catcher Travis d’Arnaud depart for the Los Angeles Angels in free agency. d’Arnaud led Atlanta catchers last season with 89 starts, sharing duties with Sean Murphy, who started 69 games but struggled offensively.
After an All-Star season in 2023, Murphy had a tough 2024 at the plate, hitting just .193 with 10 home runs, 25 RBIs, and a .636 OPS.
McCann, also a former All-Star, posted a .234 batting average with 8 home runs and 31 RBIs for the Baltimore Orioles last season. He made 65 starts as Adley Rutschman’s backup.
