Per 9NEWS Denver’s Mike Klis, the Denver Broncos have signed veteran punter to a one-year contract valued at $1.225 million. The 30-year-old left-footed punter is expected to compete for the starting job in what looks to be an upcoming punting battle in Denver.
With Riley Dixon departing in free agency, the Broncos have turned to veteran punter Matt Haack as his replacement. Haack, who entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2017, originally signed with the Miami Dolphins, where Denver’s new special teams coordinator, Darren Rizzi, was coaching at the time. Haack remained with Miami through the 2020 season before bouncing around the league. He spent 2021 with the Bills, 2022 with the Colts, had stints with the Cardinals, Browns, and Bills again in 2023, and finished last season with appearances for both the Giants and Jaguars.
Haack’s last role as a team’s primary punter came in 2022 with Indianapolis. Since then, he has played in just five games over the past two years—one with the Browns in 2023 and four with the Giants. Given that limited action, it’s unlikely the Broncos are done adding competition at the position this offseason.

His connection with Rizzi is likely what brought him to Denver, but another punter is expected to be signed ahead of training camp. That addition could come in the form of another veteran, a late-round draft pick, or an undrafted free agent. As 9NEWS Denver’s Mike Klis noted, it’s likely the Broncos will target a rookie, either through the later rounds of the draft or free agency. The UFL could also be a potential source, as it has produced quality specialists in recent years.
One way or another, a punting competition is on the horizon this summer. Time will tell who the Broncos bring in to challenge Haack—and whether one of them can become the long-term answer at the position.
