The New York Giants got a bit of good news in their pursuit of Aaron Rodgers on Wednesday, March 19, when the Minnesota Vikings withdrew from the competition for the four-time MVP quarterback. But soon after, that positive development came with a complication. Both the Giants and the Pittsburgh Steelers have submitted offers to Rodgers during free agency, and with the Vikings stepping aside, it appears more likely that one of those two teams will ultimately sign him. However, while Minnesota’s exit might be expected to speed up Rodgers’ decision, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Wednesday that the opposite is true. According to Schefter, Minnesota’s decision hasn’t had any impact on Rodgers’ timeline. A source tracking Rodgers’ potential plans for the 2025 season said earlier in the day that the free-agent quarterback “is in no rush at all.”
Schefter echoed that in a post on X, saying, “Nothing related to Minnesota has altered Aaron Rodgers’ timeline.” While teams that extend offers to quarterbacks typically hope for a quick decision—especially for a player at such a critical position—the Giants aren’t getting that from Rodgers. They could be stuck waiting days, or even weeks, for clarity. That delay complicates New York’s roster planning and strategy moving forward. The uncertainty makes things even harder for the Giants, who aren’t sure what other realistic quarterback options they’ll have.

The Giants currently hold the No. 3 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft in April. However, most experts believe only two quarterbacks—Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders—are worthy of going that high. It’s unclear whether New York will be able to draft either one with the third pick, as there’s no guarantee either QB will still be on the board by then. Even if the Giants manage to land Ward or Sanders, they’ll still need a seasoned veteran on the roster. That veteran, whether it’s Rodgers or someone else, could be asked to start games in 2025, possibly even Week 1. The longer Rodgers takes to make a decision, the higher the risk that New York misses out on the other remaining veteran quarterbacks.
