The Reds Highly Taleted Star is kicking off the new season with some extra financial stability. The 32-year-old signed a three-year contract extension with the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday. The Reds traded for Trevino in December, sending reliever Fernando Cruz to New York in return. According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the deal is worth nearly $15 million over three years and includes a player option for the 2028 season. Trevino’s latest contract highlights the impressive journey of the 2014 sixth-round draft pick. Originally picked up by the Yankees from the Texas Rangers just before the 2022 season, Trevino was initially brought in as a potential platoon option.

Instead, Trevino quickly won over fans by hitting 11 home runs, driving in 43 runs, and posting a 2.3 bWAR over 115 games. His impressive debut season with the Yankees earned him both an All-Star selection and a Gold Glove Award. He also became just the second catcher—alongside St. Louis Cardinals legend Yadier Molina—to take home the Platinum Glove. However, injuries over the past two seasons have limited his playing time and effectiveness, as he struggled with a .213 batting average and a .611 OPS. Last year, Austin Wells took over as the Yankees’ primary catcher, leading to Trevino’s trade in December. So far this spring, Trevino has gotten off to a slow start with the Reds, hitting just .148 in 29 plate appearances, with more strikeouts (six) than hits (four). Cincinnati is hoping he can help them end their playoff drought, having not won a postseason game since 2012.
