The Los Angeles Angels are dealing with multiple injuries in the infield as they approach Opening Day. Starting shortstop Zach Neto is still recovering from shoulder surgery with no set timeline for his return. Third baseman Anthony Rendon is out indefinitely after undergoing hip surgery, and his replacement, Yoán Moncada, is managing a deep thumb bruise.
Although Moncada is expected to be ready for the opener, the Angels sought additional infield depth. In response, they signed Nicky Lopez to a Major League deal, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Lopez will be available for the team’s season opener against the Chicago White Sox.
The Angels added infield depth with Nicky Lopez signing
Lopez spent the first four and a half seasons of his career with the Kansas City Royals, earning a reputation as a reliable and versatile defender. Primarily a second baseman, he has the ability to play all four infield positions.
Traded to the White Sox for the 2024 season, Lopez later declined a minor league assignment and opted for free agency. He then signed a minor league deal with the Chicago Cubs, receiving a non-roster invite to spring training. However, after failing to secure a roster spot for the Tokyo Series, he requested and was granted his release.
Recognizing his defensive versatility, the Angels signed Lopez to a one-year, $850,000 contract and added him to their Opening Day roster, according to MLB.com.
The Angels are hoping to break an 11-year playoff drought, having last won a postseason series in 2009. They finished last in the AL West in 2024 with a 63-99 record, but there is some optimism heading into 2025. Three-time MVP Mike Trout is healthy to start the season and has transitioned to right field to help reduce injury risk.
Trout, who has missed 213 games over the past two seasons, is determined to return to top form after a season-ending meniscus tear last year.
