CINCINNATI (AP) – The Cincinnati Reds placed outfielder on the 10-day injured list Wednesday due to a left calf strain.
The move, retroactive to March 24, comes just a day before the Reds’ season opener against the San Francisco Giants.
“He had a scan today, and it’s a very low-grade strain,” manager Terry Francona said. “But given his history—he tried playing through it last year and it caused issues—we need to address it now. He’s not exactly sure when it happened.”
Francona noted that Hays could potentially miss just six games but emphasized the importance of caution.
The Reds signed Hays to a one-year, $5 million contract on Jan. 30.
In 2023, Hays missed time from April 21 to May 13 with a similar left calf strain. He also dealt with a left hamstring strain in August and was sidelined for three weeks in September due to a kidney infection.

Hays, an AL All-Star in 2023 with the Baltimore Orioles, returned for the postseason but struggled at the plate, going hitless with three strikeouts in four at-bats for the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLDS against the Mets.
Last season, he played a total of 85 games between the Orioles and Phillies, posting a .255 batting average with five home runs and 20 RBIs.
