HUGE BOOST: Eagles Bolster Offensive Line With Another Standout Star After Ex 1st Rounder’s Departure

The Philadelphia Eagles have long prioritized strong offensive and defensive line play throughout Howie Roseman’s tenure.

However, for the first time in years, the team faces a significant gap in the middle of the offensive line following former New York Jets first-round pick Mekhi Becton’s move to the Los Angeles Chargers.

To address the void, the Eagles have opted to reunite with a familiar face, bringing back former offensive lineman Matt Pryor.

Eagles Bring Back Matt Pryor After Four-Year Hiatus

Pryor last played for the Eagles in 2020 after being selected in the sixth round of the 2018 draft. He was later traded to the Indianapolis Colts during the 2021 offseason.

With experience at both guard and tackle, Pryor brings valuable versatility and starting-caliber ability to Philadelphia. Just as importantly, he’s a familiar player the Eagles trust and know well.

In 2020, Pryor started 10 games for the Eagles before transitioning to tackle with the Colts, where he had less success

What Do The Eagles’ Options Look Like At Guard

The addition of Pryor suggests the Eagles are still assessing their options for the interior of the offensive line. Four positions appear set—Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson, Cam Jurgens, and Lane Johnson—barring injury.

The battle for the fifth spot at right guard is between former third-round pick Tyler Steen, ex-Texans first-rounder Kenyon Green, and Pryor.

Green struggled to establish himself as a starting guard in Houston but hopes to follow in the footsteps of Becton, who flourished as a dominant run blocker in his lone season with the Eagles under renowned offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland.

Meanwhile, Steen has yet to see significant playing time in Philadelphia since being drafted out of Alabama in 2023. Though he has faced challenges in training camp, he has shown promise, particularly when he filled in capably during the Eagles’ Week 3 win over the Saints last season.

Does Pryor Have A Genuine Shot To Start This Season?

Realistically, the Eagles will likely prioritize giving Steen or Green an opportunity to claim the right guard spot.

Green is under contract for just one more year unless the Eagles make the unexpected decision to pick up his fifth-year option, which would cost over $16 million. Still, there’s value in developing a player with the physical tools and potential to become a high-level interior lineman in the NFL.

However, as always, young players either sink or swim. If neither Steen nor Green proves ready, Pryor will be more than willing to step in.

Despite playing on an underwhelming offensive line in Chicago, Pryor was a rare bright spot. While he may not be a top-tier guard, he offers steady, dependable play at a position that continues to gain importance in today’s NFL.
