The UNC basketball program has secured its first addition of the 2025 offseason.
The 6-foot-6 freshman averaged 8.3 points and 3.1 rebounds per game this season while leading all Big 12 freshmen with 64 made three-pointers.
After meeting with North Carolina’s staff via Zoom on Tuesday, it didn’t take long for Powell to decide on Chapel Hill as his next home. His commitment was reported later that night, with Joe Tipton of On3 and Inside Carolina breaking the news.
Powell had multiple options but ultimately chose UNC over Ole Miss and Ohio State. He arrives with three seasons of eligibility remaining.
Primarily a starter at West Virginia, Powell had some standout performances as a freshman, including two 17-point outings. His shooting ability, particularly from beyond the arc, will be a valuable asset for the Tar Heels.
Beyond his scoring, Powell’s size and athleticism make him a versatile player capable of handling multiple positions. While he may not have been among the most high-profile transfers, he has the potential to be an underrated addition for North Carolina.
For UNC fans, Powell’s commitment marks an important step in reshaping the roster. However, the work isn’t done yet, as the program continues looking to add more talent through the transfer portal in the coming weeks.
