The Braves versatile experienced star has rejoined the organization for the second time this season, signing a minor league deal, according to the team’s official transaction page. Chavez had previously elected free agency after being designated for assignment following his season debut against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Chavez, 41, originally signed with Atlanta late in Spring Training after being released by the Texas Rangers. He didn’t make the Opening Day roster but was added to the 26-man roster after reliever Hector Neris was designated for assignment following two rough outings with the Braves.
Now in his 18th MLB season, Chavez pitched two innings for Atlanta on March 31, giving up a home run in his outing. After that appearance, the Braves designated him for assignment to make room for Zach Thompson as a fresh bullpen arm.
Chavez, who made his MLB debut in 2008 and first pitched for the Braves in 2010, has been with Atlanta every season since 2021, appearing in 46 games last year.
