The Tampa Bay Rays could be facing some tough choices in the coming months—decisions that might benefit the Chicago Cubs. With ongoing financial limitations, the Rays may look to unload some of their higher-paid players, and Yandy Díaz stands out as a potential trade candidate. He’d be a great fit for the Cubs, who are seeking to upgrade their offense. Even though Chicago already has established players at first and third base, Díaz’s offensive production would be hard to ignore.

Díaz brings both power and on-base ability, shown by his impressive .330 batting average in 2023. Yardbarker’s Justin Mears recently predicted that Díaz could be on the move this season, especially with his free agency approaching—something that often leads to trades in Tampa Bay. After missing the playoffs in 2023 for the first time since 2018, the Rays may consider dealing players like Díaz if they fall out of contention this summer.

Díaz has hit 23 or more home runs in two of the past four seasons, and while he’s had some strikeout issues in 2024, they haven’t come from poor plate discipline—unlike problems seen with teams like Philadelphia. He’s expected to be one of the top trade targets at the deadline. For teams in need of a corner infielder, Díaz should be a priority.

The Cubs have a solid farm system and could realistically make a deal happen if they’re serious about adding Díaz to their lineup. At 33, he’s a career 125 OPS+ hitter, a Silver Slugger, and an All-Star—making him one of the best possible upgrades Chicago could pursue if he becomes available.
