Auburn’s Class of 2025 quarterback signee Deuce Knight isn’t openly chasing the starting job this season. At present, Jackson Arnold is firmly entrenched as QB1 on the Plains, even choosing to skip the Manning Passing Academy to remain with his teammates.

Knight has made it clear his focus isn’t on competing for the top spot, but rather on contributing to the team in any way he can.

“It’s been really important for me because I’m someone who needs to be out there doing it,” Knight told AL.com. “All these reps are helping me understand the offense and recognize different defensive looks. I’m learning how to play faster.

“I’m just coming out each day to improve. I’m not thinking about all the outside stuff. I just want to get better every day and be the best teammate I can be. That’s my main focus.”

Knight praised Arnold for his leadership and willingness to help, saying they often go over plays together late at night. “He’s like another coach on the field,” Knight said. “He’s also a fun guy to be around — we’re a lot alike.”

Deuce Knight shared what some might call a shocking message on his imminent freshman season with Auburn football

Arnold, who still has three years of eligibility remaining, is expected to lead Auburn’s offense for the foreseeable future. That timeline raises questions about how long Knight will be content in a backup role. While redshirting for two seasons is a possibility, much can change by the time Arnold is a senior — assuming he hasn’t entered the NFL Draft by then.

Projecting that far ahead is nearly impossible, especially in the ever-shifting world of college football. Coaching changes could further complicate things; Hugh Freeze’s job status remains uncertain following back-to-back losing seasons. A new coaching staff could bring major changes, including at quarterback.

Still, for now, Knight is committed to being a positive force in Auburn’s locker room — even if he sees limited action on the field in his freshman year.
