The Cincinnati Reds edged out the San Francisco Giants 1-0 on Tuesday night, thanks to an outstanding outing from left-hander Nick Lodolo. While that’s a bright spot for the Reds, there’s also some less fortunate news: Matt McLain is dealing with another injury setback.

McLain hasn’t played since Friday, April 4, due to what the team is calling a mild strain in his left hamstring. He did participate in some running drills before Monday’s game, which is an encouraging development. Still, the Reds chose to err on the side of caution, placing him on the 10-day injured list.

Manager Terry Francona described the injury as “minor” and expressed optimism about McLain’s return, stating, “He can come back next Tuesday.” Francona added that the team didn’t think it was wise to risk further injury by rushing him back.

Matt McLain has gotten off to a slow start at the plate in 2025, batting just .214. However, there are signs of promise — four of his six hits have gone for extra bases, including three home runs. That power has helped him maintain an impressive .571 slugging percentage through 31 plate appearances. The former first-round pick (2021) looks poised for the bounce-back season many in Cincinnati have been anticipating.

Reds place second baseman Matt McLain on injured list

McLain had a breakout rookie year in 2023, slashing .290/.357/.507 with 16 homers and 14 stolen bases over 89 games. However, he missed the entire 2024 season following surgery on his left shoulder. If he avoids setbacks, he’s expected to return early next week. Reds manager Terry Francona remains optimistic, saying, “The hope is that he can come back and be himself.”

In McLain’s absence, Gavin Lux started at second base on Monday. Meanwhile, the Reds have called up Will Benson and Noelvi Marte, while Carson Spiers was optioned to Triple-A.
