Auburn just can’t seem to catch a break when it comes to spring injuries in the secondary.
Freshman cornerback Devin Williams has reportedly suffered a season-ending knee injury during spring camp, as first reported by Nathan King of Auburn Undercover. It’s a tough setback for the promising young defender, especially considering this is the second straight offseason a young Auburn corner has gone down with a serious knee injury—last spring it was Tyler Scott, who missed the entire 2024 season.
Williams, ranked as the No. 367 overall player and No. 35 cornerback in the 2025 class by the 247Sports Composite, was expected to compete for early playing time. While the injury will likely sideline him for the entire season, he’s still a high-upside prospect with a bright future on the Plains once he recovers.
The good news? Auburn’s cornerback room still looks solid heading into the fall. Kayin Lee and Jay Crawford, both returning starters who played 500+ snaps last year per PFF, should lead the way. Young talents like Raion Strader and Blake Woodby, another highly regarded freshman, add some depth and athleticism to the group. So while Williams’ absence hurts from a development standpoint, the Tigers aren’t in panic mode at the position.
With all this, the pressure continues to build for Hugh Freeze in his third season. A 5-11 record in SEC play over two seasons isn’t going to cut it for long at Auburn, especially with the expanded 12-team Playoff giving programs like Auburn a clearer path to national relevance. The 2025 campaign looks like a make-or-break year, and the Tigers will need to overcome adversity early if they want to finally take that step forward.
