Atlanta's braves Front Office

The Atlanta Braves kicked off Sunday with a roster change that could prove intriguing in the coming days. AJ Smith-Shawver was sent down to the minors, and in a corresponding move, right-handed pitcher Michael Petersen was called up to join the team for their road trip.

Smith-Shawver, much like in his previous major league appearances, has had an up-and-down start to the season. In three starts, he’s posted a 4.61 ERA over 13.2 innings, striking out 17 but also giving up 19 hits and issuing 8 walks. The Braves are likely hoping he can sharpen his command during his time in the minors.

Meanwhile, Michael Petersen has been called up to give the Braves a fresh bullpen option during their current road trip. He was acquired from the Angels on April 1 and is still new to the organization. Petersen made his big league debut last season and pitched 19 2⁄3 innings for the Dodgers and Marlins in 2024, compiling a 5.95 ERA over 16 relief appearances.

Perhaps the most notable aspect of this roster shuffle is what it could signal for the rotation. With a starting spot now available, Spencer Strider’s return and 2025 debut could be just around the corner. How the Braves navigate their pitching staff for the rest of April will be something to watch, especially with Strider and others potentially making their mark soon.
