Following the New York Rangers’ decision to part ways with Peter Laviolette after a disappointing end to the 2024–25 season, early speculation has begun around his potential replacement—one name gaining traction is Vancouver Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet.

According to The Athletic’s Arthur Staple, there’s some history between Tocchet and the Rangers. He previously interviewed for the New York job that ultimately went to Gerard Gallant in 2021, so general manager Chris Drury is already familiar with him. Tocchet’s standout work in Vancouver—where he earned 2024 Coach of the Year honors—has only boosted his league-wide reputation. His strong relationship with current Rangers forward J.T. Miller, who previously played under Tocchet in Vancouver, could also play a factor.

While the Canucks reportedly want to retain Tocchet, his future remains uncertain. His contract includes a club option for the 2025–26 season, but Vancouver has yet to activate it. Tocchet didn’t rule anything out during his end-of-season availability, saying:

“Of course I want to be back here… But there’s a process to go through with Jim (Rutherford) and Patrik (Allvin), and that’s really where it’s at.”

Tocchet added that he needed to “take a breath” before diving into those discussions, hinting at potential openness to new opportunities.

The Rangers’ coaching vacancy joins a growing list around the NHL, with the Ducks, Bruins, Flyers, and Blackhawks also on the hunt for new bench bosses. If the Canucks don’t lock Tocchet down soon, the Rangers—or another team—may come calling.
