Atlanta's braves Front Office

Minnesota Twins pitcher Scott Blewett (No. 60) is seen throwing during the first inning of a game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Lee Health Sports Complex.

Looking to reinforce their struggling bullpen, the Atlanta Braves have acquired right-handed reliever Scott Blewett from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for cash considerations. In a corresponding move, the Braves designated left-handed pitcher José Suarez for assignment to clear space on the 40-man roster.

The 29-year-old Blewett is now with his third team in under a week. He began the 2025 season with the Twins, making two appearances before being designated for assignment. The Orioles then claimed him off waivers, and after two outings with Baltimore, he was DFA’d again—eventually finding a new home in Atlanta.

Despite the quick transitions, Blewett has impressed in limited major league work. In nine innings split between the Twins and Orioles, he’s surrendered just one earned run for a 1.00 ERA, striking out 11 while issuing only one walk. Since his MLB debut in 2021, Blewett has compiled a career 1.93 ERA over 37 1/3 relief innings, boasting a 23.1% strikeout rate and a strong 2.16 SIERA. While he doesn’t overpower hitters with velocity, he relies on pitch variety and strong command to generate swings and misses while keeping walks in check.

The Braves are doing whatever they can to help their bullpen

Blewett’s lack of minor league options complicates his future in Atlanta. Like his previous stops, the Braves must keep him on the active roster or risk losing him to waivers. That’s kept his name circulating in transaction news, but his strong performances continue to draw interest from teams in need of bullpen help.

Atlanta is one of those teams. Heading into Monday’s matchup with the St. Louis Cardinals, the Braves sit in last place in the NL East with an 8-13 record and rank 23rd in MLB with a 4.36 team ERA. Their bullpen has only converted four of seven save chances and has been a revolving door of journeymen and bounce-back candidates. Blewett joins other recent bullpen additions like Rafael Montero and José Suarez as the team continues its search for stability.

Suarez’s time with the Braves didn’t last long. Acquired from the Angels just weeks ago, the left-hander pitched in three games, giving up six earned runs over 5 2/3 innings for a 9.53 ERA. With Blewett needing a roster spot, Suarez was the odd man out.

Now the Braves hope Blewett can continue his strong early-season form and provide a steady presence in the middle innings. His approach leaves little margin for error, but his results so far have been encouraging. For a team in need of dependable relief arms, Blewett is a calculated risk. Whether he becomes a permanent fixture or another roster casualty remains to be seen, but he’ll get his chance to contribute as Atlanta looks to turn things around.
