The Atlanta Braves have been dealing with a lack of starting pitching depth in recent weeks. Early in the season, they were forced to rely on some questionable options to fill the rotation. Things seemed to be improving with the return of Spencer Strider from elbow surgery, but he’s now back on the injured list due to a hamstring issue sustained during a throwing session. While the injury isn’t considered major, Strider is expected to miss at least two starts, and hamstring problems can linger, making his timeline for a full recovery uncertain.
Given these concerns, the Braves might consider making a major move for a starting pitcher. One ideal target is Sonny Gray of the St. Louis Cardinals. Gray has quietly been one of baseball’s most reliable starters over the past few seasons, even though he doesn’t always get top-tier recognition. Atlanta could use a dependable veteran like him right now.
Because of Gray’s sizable contract, the Cardinals might either accept a lighter prospect package or cover part of his salary in exchange for higher-quality prospects. Either scenario could work in the Braves’ favor, and they should strongly consider exploring a trade. With the National League race tightening, Atlanta can’t afford to lose more ground.
