Christopher Sanchez appeared to be on the rise after a stellar showing against the Giants last week. However, things went south during the Phillies’ 5-1 defeat to the Mets at Citi Field. Sanchez exited after just two innings due to left forearm soreness.

He threw 58 pitches but lacked control, a stark difference from his previous outing. His sinker dropped in velocity—from an average of 95.9 MPH to 94.7—and his changeup wasn’t nearly as effective.

Although he did manage a solid sequence against Juan Soto, Sanchez didn’t look like the same dominant pitcher.

This immediately raised concerns for the Phillies and their fans. Forearm soreness can sometimes indicate a more serious issue, and the team is considering further evaluation, including a possible MRI. Despite the uncertainty, Sanchez remained optimistic after the game.

“I feel normal right now,” he told NBC Sports Philadelphia. “The doctor checked me out, and I’m confident this isn’t something we need to be overly worried about.”

Still, his availability going forward is unclear—a troubling development for a Phillies rotation already facing challenges. Aaron Nola has been inconsistent, and Ranger Suarez has yet to pitch this season. If Sanchez is sidelined, it could lead to Taijuan Walker getting a more extended role or pressure the team to bring Suarez back earlier than planned.

Joe Ross stepped in and provided three solid innings in relief, but the Phillies’ offense couldn’t mount a comeback.

They’ll now rely on Zack Wheeler to help avoid a series sweep at the hands of the Mets.

With Sanchez’s health in question, the Phillies’ early-season plans may be at risk. They’re currently four games behind the Mets in the NL East with a 13-11 record, and every loss makes the road tougher.
