For the past few weeks, it was widely expected that UCLA quarterback Joey Aguilar would transfer to Tennessee. On Tuesday, that expectation became reality, as Aguilar confirmed his commitment to the Volunteers in a statement to ON3.
Aguilar chose to leave UCLA following former Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava’s decision to enter the transfer portal and join the Bruins.
During his last two seasons at Appalachian State, Aguilar threw for 6,760 yards on 850 pass attempts. His experience makes him an ideal fit for Tennessee, particularly given his strong college track record. In his first year as a starter in 2023, he threw 33 touchdown passes. Although his numbers dipped in 2024—including fewer yards, completions, and attempts, along with more turnovers—the entire App State program saw a downturn that season. The team has since brought in Dowell Loggains as head coach for the 2025 season.

Tennessee’s quarterback room also includes Jake Merklinger and George MacIntyre. With Aguilar joining the mix, the Volunteers will have multiple viable options heading into the 2025 college football campaign.
