Auburn football has now seen its eighth player enter the spring transfer portal, with tight end Rico Walker announcing his departure after just one season on the team. A former 4-star recruit from the 2023 class, Walker began his college career at Maryland, where he logged four catches for 27 yards. He transferred to Auburn last year but appeared in only five games without recording any stats.

With veteran Brandon Frazier returning and Maryland transfer Preston Howard joining the roster, Walker likely faced an uphill battle for playing time. Seeking more opportunities on the field, he’s opted to explore his options elsewhere.

Luke Deal receives an invitation to an NFL mini-camp

After six seasons with Auburn football, tight end Luke Deal’s playing career will continue—at least for now. Although he went undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft, Deal has received a mini-camp invite from the Detroit Lions, giving him a chance to earn a spot on the team’s offseason roster.

Known for his leadership and character, Deal was a two-time team captain at Auburn and contributed to multiple leadership and culture initiatives within the program. On the field, he totaled 17 receptions for 116 yards and two touchdowns during his time on the Plains. The Lions’ mini-camp will offer him a valuable opportunity to showcase his skills and potentially secure a contract moving forward.
