BREAKING: Elliotte Friedman Send Unexpected Message Over Rangers Coaching Job

The New York Rangers have dismissed head coach Peter Laviolette after a lackluster 39-36-7 campaign, just one season after capturing the Presidents’ Trophy. This marks the third coaching change under general manager Chris Drury since he took over in 2021. While Drury is open to considering a first-time NHL head coach, reports suggest he favors someone with a winning track record—especially after securing a contract extension with the organization.

One name stands out: former Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan, a two-time Stanley Cup champion. On the latest episode of 32 Thoughts, insider Elliotte Friedman said he would be “shocked” if Sullivan doesn’t end up coaching the Rangers, emphasizing the importance of the hire: “They have to get this right… I will be shocked if he isn’t their guy.”

Elliotte Friedman further emphasized the strong connection between Mike Sullivan and the Rangers, stating, “What is going to happen with Sullivan? I just don’t know if you’re the New York Rangers, you are allowing anyone to snatch Sullivan from your clutches.” That sentiment echoes growing speculation around the league that New York views Sullivan as their top target.

Among those adding to the chorus is former NHL defenseman and analyst P.K. Subban, who has been one of the most vocal proponents of a Sullivan-to-Rangers move. Subban has consistently predicted that Sullivan will take over behind the bench at Madison Square Garden.

On ESPN, P.K. Subban named the New York Rangers as the top destination for recently fired coach Mike Sullivan, placing them ahead of other potential suitors like the Bruins, Ducks, Flyers, and Kraken. “Number one (destination), we’re taking to the Tri-State: The New York Rangers,” Subban said. “To me, this is a Stanley Cup team… With the right coach, this team could win the Stanley Cup.” He also expressed confidence in GM Chris Drury making the necessary roster adjustments this summer.

Sullivan, who was dismissed by the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday after nearly a decade behind the bench, leaves as the winningest coach in franchise history. Despite his back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017, three straight seasons without a playoff appearance led to his exit. Nevertheless, he remains a high-profile coaching candidate, with several teams expected to pursue him.

Elliotte Friedman reinforced the idea that the Rangers must act quickly and decisively: “There are other teams that will call… I just don’t see any way the Rangers can allow themselves to be beaten to Mike Sullivan.”
