BREAKING NEWS: GoFundMe Raises $20,000 for Family of 14-Year-Old Who Died in East Bend Motocross Crash
EAST BEND, N.C. — A wave of community support has surged in the wake of a tragic motocross accident that claimed the life of 14-year-old Mason Greene in East Bend over the weekend. Within just 48 hours of the incident, a GoFundMe campaign launched by a family friend has raised over $20,000 to help cover funeral expenses and support the grieving family.
Mason, a passionate motocross rider since the age of seven, was participating in a local amateur competition at East Bend Motocross Park when the fatal accident occurred late Saturday afternoon. According to eyewitnesses and initial reports, Mason lost control of his bike during a jump and suffered severe injuries despite wearing full protective gear. Emergency medical personnel were on the scene within minutes, but Mason was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
“He lived and breathed motocross. It was his dream to go pro one day,” said family friend and fundraiser organizer Sarah Jennings. “Mason was full of life, always smiling, and he had a heart that touched everyone around him. This loss is unimaginable, and we want to do everything we can to support his parents, Mark and Jenny Greene, during this painful time.” The GoFundMe page includes heartfelt messages from donors and friends, many of whom describe Mason as “kind-hearted,” “fearless,” and “an inspiration.”
The fundraiser’s initial goal was $10,000, but it quickly doubled as donations poured in from across Yadkin County and beyond. Community members, fellow motocross enthusiasts, and even strangers have rallied around the Greene family, leaving notes of encouragement and memories of Mason alongside their contributions. As of Monday morning, more than 600 individuals had contributed to the campaign, with some single donations exceeding $1,000.
East Bend Motocross Park, where the accident occurred, released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the incident and pledging full cooperation with local authorities in their ongoing investigation. “Safety has always been our top priority, and we are heartbroken by this tragic loss,” the statement read. Organizers announced they would be temporarily closing the park out of respect for Mason and to review safety protocols.
A candlelight vigil is being planned for later this week at Mason’s middle school, where teachers and classmates are mourning the sudden loss of a young life taken too soon. “He was the kind of student who lit up a classroom,” said school principal Tara Milton. “Always respectful, always energetic—he brought a sense of joy to everything he did.” Counselors have been made available to students and staff throughout the week.
The Greene family, while devastated, has expressed profound gratitude for the outpouring of love and generosity. “We are overwhelmed with the kindness people have shown,” said Mark Greene in a brief statement. “Mason was our world, and while no words can heal this pain, knowing how many lives he touched gives us strength.” The family has requested privacy as they make arrangements for Mason’s funeral, which is expected to be held later this week.
