Disney Breaks a Decade-Long Tradition in Its Parks, Making History

Disney’s Magic Kingdom has taken pride in catering directly to families and guests of all ages since it first opened to the public in 1971. The corporation has always maintained a rather conservative stance regarding alcohol on park property, opting to run as a “dry” theme park to guarantee a more family-friendly atmosphere in order to further align with that wholesome purpose. However, Walt Disney World will depart from a longstanding practice that has been in place for an astounding 54 years at the end of this year when the first bar is added to Magic Kingdom. The Beak and Barrel, a pirate-themed tavern located close to Pirates of the Caribbean, a beloved attraction at Magic Kingdom, will be Disney’s first on-site bar starting in late 2025.

The Beak and Barrel will provide a wide variety of culinary selections with a nautical motif and provide plenty of alcoholic drinks for visitors aged 21 and up. This suggests a significant change in direction for Disney World’s main theme park. “It’s time to raise a glass and let out a hearty shout – The Beak and Barrel opens later this year in Adventureland at Magic Kingdom Park!” Tyler McNulty, the Communication Manager for Walt Disney Imagineering, posted on the Disney Parks Blog.

“Established by the legendary pirate rumrunner, Captain Meridian ‘Merry’ Goldwyn, and her talkative first mate, Rummy, this lively pirate pub will soon welcome swashbucklers, scoundrels, bandits and buccaneers of all ages from every corner of the seven seas,” said McNulty. McNulty disclosed in his statement that The Beak and Barrel will be separated into two main rooms: The Mess and The Captains’ Quarters, though specifics on the tavern’s cuisine have not yet been made public.

The Johnny Depp-led Pirates of the Caribbean movies from the 2000s and 2010s appear to be heavily referenced in this new Disney World restaurant. For example, Tia Dalma from Naomie Harris will be giving away an Enchanted Rum Bottle, and there will be a number of miniature ships in bottles that “have been known to come alive and engage in a fearsome battle.”
