Sad News for Trevon Diggs: Insider Offers Trade, Cut, or Hope Options

Trevon Diggs, a ball-hawking cornerback, is one guy the Dallas Cowboys are anxious to see return to full form after being plagued by injuries to important players over the past several seasons. However, there are certain challenges here. In 2023, Diggs’ injury problems started when he tore his ACL during a Week 3 practice, necessitating surgery and a season-long absence. At first, his 2024 comeback appeared bright since he played well and displayed glimmers of his Pro Bowl form. However, following Week 14, a cartilage ailment in the same knee kept him out of commission for the remainder of the year, ending his comeback once more.
Diggs had a chondral tissue graft treatment in January 2025 to replace the torn cartilage in his left knee. The timing for rehabilitation was and still is important. Diggs has stated that he is aiming for Week 1 as his recovery date, but CowboysCountry.com has claimed that he would miss training camp and maybe the start of the regular season. Diggs’ decision to prolong part of his rehabilitation in Miami instead of fully participating in the Cowboys’ offseason program added to the uncertainty, according to writer Mike Fisher. This move secretly infuriated several people at The Star. The Cowboys are still hopeful in spite of the absence.
In a recent report, coach Brian Schottenheimer said, “It’s going good.” Every indication is encouraging. Now, the most important queries are: When will Trevon Diggs be back? What can be anticipated regarding his position in the defensive backfield of the Cowboys in 2025? A comeback against the Eagles in Week 1? Perhaps. As he continues his recuperation, he is currently on the active/physically unable to perform (PUP) list. He will have to miss the first four games if he is placed on the list through the opening regular-season game, which means that his earliest possible comeback will be in Week 5 against the Jets in October.
Are there any other choices? “The value of having him outweighs the savings from cutting him (which changes next spring),” according to our Cowboys insider Mike Fisher. A swap? What makes a team want to sign him right now? Hope is the only thing left. That’s all. Some people would anticipate that Trevon will shoulder the most of the workload when he returns, but that may not be the case. Even if the Jacksonville Jaguars acquired cornerback Jourdan Lewis, the defensive backfield is still sufficiently strong (but not quite deep enough with proven bodies).
Over the last three seasons, DaRon Bland has become a standout. In 2023, he set an NFL record for the most interceptions returned for a touchdown in a single season and was selected to the First Team All-Pro.
In 2025, the Cowboys anticipate that a few young back-end players will step up and have an influence. A third-round selection from East Carolina, rookie Shavon Revel Jr. has earned some preseason interest as a possible Diggs replacement. Caelen Carson, who is starting his sophomore season, is trying to recover after a difficult rookie campaign. He is also being depended upon to help solidify the secondary, thus the coaching staff is anticipating significant progress from him.
Although it’s still unclear if Diggs will make a comeback before the season begins or in the middle of the season, the two-time Pro Bowler is anticipated to make a big impact both on the field and as a coach for the Cowboys’ defensive backfield’s younger players. And Dallas’ best “hope” is to wait for that.
