A 25-year-old Coldplay song about Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson’s breakup went viral on TikTok and made it to the Hot 100 for the first time.

Dakota Johnson is caught between two potential love partners in the recently released film Materialists. She is once again unmarried in real life. Chris Martin of Coldplay, Johnson’s partner of almost eight years, recently ended their relationship. Johnson is looking for “a meaningful life on all levels,” but her ex has been given a surprise hit song that is 25 years old. From Coldplay’s 2000 first album Parachutes, the pastoral slow jam “Sparks” is one of those love songs that sounds more like a warm blanket than a tune. It gives me the impression that I’m seeing a small-town, arthouse romantic comedy filled with longing. Despite never being a hit, Coldplay’s “Sparks” is so beloved by fans that they have included it in their set lists for their ongoing Music of the Spheres Tour. Unexpectedly, the song has gone viral when they performed it in Vegas.

Coldplay performed at Allegiant Stadium in Vegas on June 6 and 7. They were the first performances following the announcement of the Martin-Johnson split. Chris Martin looked especially tearful during the June 7 “Sparks” performance, which one fan uploaded to TikTok with the caption, “When you don’t want to believe the breakup rumours but this was Chris during Sparks tonight 9.”Millions of people have watched the clip, and it inspired a wave of other clips that use the tune. According to Billboard, “Sparks” currently serves as the music for over 500,000 TikTok videos. As a result, weekly streaming have increased from 3 million to 5.7 million, nearly doubling from three weeks earlier. It was sufficient to propel “Sparks” to the Hot 100 for the first time; this week, the song made its debut at number 93.
