Chiefs ‘Patrick Mahomes vs. Andy Reid’ Debate Misses the Super Bowl Mark

Patrick Mahomes, the quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, has been nothing short of exceptional since assuming the starting position in 2018. Before playing in the NFL for ten years, he already had a first-ballot Hall of Fame resume with three Super Bowl victories, seven AFC Championship Games, and seven AFC West crowns. Together with coach Andy Reid, he has formed the greatest quarterback-head coach team of the future generation. The Chiefs, who haven’t missed a conference title since 2017, the final season before Mahomes took over, are in the heart of things every season thanks to this duo.

Reid’s reputation as one of the greatest players in NFL history was solidified by this incredible run in the latter years of his career. However, it hasn’t entirely validated his work for some people. Colin Cowherd of FS1 made the argument that the man under center is mostly responsible for the success of these contemporary tandems when talking about the quarterback-coach relationship in the game today. He called out Reid without hesitation in order to emphasize this point. “As great as Andy Reid is, he only started hoisting trophies when he got Patrick Mahomes.”

It’s a rather daring move, but it’s one that can be justified just by glancing at the record books; Reid never made it to the top despite coming very close with the Philadelphia Eagles on multiple occasions.

But in this case, does correlation always imply causation? With 301 career victories, Reid is the fourth-most successful head coach in NFL history. Mahomes has been present for the majority of those wins and is undoubtedly the cause of several of them. However, it is impossible to completely cast doubt on Reid’s track record of roster growth and team construction.

Furthermore, one can do the same process with Mahomes, even if it’s simple to look at his resume before he did and speculate about how his final ten years of employment may have gone without him.Mahomes is among the greatest quarterbacks in history. However, he entered a highly efficient system that Reid had built in Kansas City. Going down the rabbit hole of hypotheticals and “what ifs” is a futile endeavor, especially in light of the exceptional accomplishments of this pair during their time together. Where else in the league, Mahomes and Reid might still be at the top of their respective jobs.

However, they have united to establish one of the greatest dynasties in the game’s history. Therefore, the “Reid vs. Mahomes Debate” is merely a way to spend time during the offseason.
