Bowen Yang relates to his ‘sad sack’ character in “Fire Island,” says he was ‘not a stretch’ to play
Of all the characters he’s played, comedian Bowen Yang relates most to “sad sack” Howie from the queer rom-com Fire Island.
In a new segment with Entertainment Weekly, the star of The Wedding Banquet sits down with costars Lily Gladstone, Kelly Marie Tran, and Han Gi-chan to answer a round of questions with an emotional, Charades-like twist: He and his costars must answer the questions tied to a specific mood, whether it’s anger, boredom, or goofiness, among other ranges of emotion.
When asked about which character he’s played that has been most like him with the emotion calling for boredom, a committed Yang wearily cites Howie and calls him a “sad sack,” which “was not a stretch” to play. He says in sheer boredom, “I was playing an Asian guy on Fire Island who wasn’t getting laid — that’s me in real life, baby.”
