Kaapo Kakko’s offseason plan, crafted with Rangers coach Peter Laviolette, appears to be paying dividends. Following a tough 2023-24 season, Kakko has come into camp with renewed energy and focus. His performance in the third preseason game demonstrated that he is serious about bouncing back. Kakko was noticeably involved and energized throughout, a positive sign for both him and the Rangers.
His linemates, Filip Chytil and Will Cuylle, also made significant contributions. Chytil continued his strong preseason with two goals and two assists through three games, and Cuylle added physicality with five hits, plus a solid scoring chance off the rush. Laviolette acknowledged the line’s effectiveness, noting that their depth could make the Rangers a more balanced and dangerous team.
With three more preseason games remaining before the season opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Oct. 9, the third line’s early success positions them well to have a meaningful impact on the team, providing much-needed depth in New York’s lineup.
