The search for the Cincinnati Reds’ next manager is heating up, with several potential candidates being discussed. While fans and media have floated big names like former managers Don Mattingly, Terry Francona, and David Ross, it ultimately comes down to who president of baseball operations Nick Krall and the Reds’ ownership believe is best for the role.
There are also under-the-radar candidates that could emerge as contenders. One such name is Darren Bush, the Oakland A’s bench coach. Despite the A’s struggles, Bush has overseen significant player development and has a history as a minor-league manager, making him a potential fit for the Reds.
Another option is Clayton McCullough, the Dodgers’ first base coach, who has been interviewed for managerial roles with teams like Cleveland and Kansas City. His experience with the Dodgers’ successful player development system could be an asset for a young Reds roster.
Rodney Linares, the Tampa Bay Rays’ bench coach, is another intriguing possibility. With experience in both the Houston Astros and Rays organizations, Linares has played a key role in developing top-tier talent. Given the Reds’ small-market approach, Linares’ experience with a similar model in Tampa Bay could make him a valuable hire.
Lastly, Miguel Cairo, the Nationals’ bench coach and former Reds player, is a familiar name for Cincinnati fans. Cairo has been gaining attention as a future managerial candidate, and his past ties to the Reds might work in his favor during the search.
While high-profile names are being mentioned, don’t be surprised if one of these less-talked-about candidates ends up taking the helm.
