Kyron Drones passed for two touchdowns and ran for another, while the Virginia Tech defense forced two turnovers that led to scores, as the Hokies marked their uncommon trip to California with a 31-7 Atlantic Coast Conference football win against host Stanford.
Kyron Drones completed 14 of 19 passes for 201 yards without an interception, and Bhayshul Tuten rushed for a game-high 73 yards and a touchdown, helping Virginia Tech (3-3, 1-1) secure a rebound win following last week’s controversial loss to Miami.
Justin Lamson, filling in for the injured Ashton Daniels, threw for 103 yards on 24 attempts for Stanford (2-3, 1-2), which dropped its second consecutive ACC game.
After a defensive first half ended with Virginia Tech leading 14-0, the Hokies took control early in the third quarter, moving 75 yards in just four plays. Drones connected twice with Da’Quan Felton during the drive, including a 17-yard completion and a 55-yard touchdown.
Felton finished as the game’s leading receiver with four catches for 84 yards.
Stanford narrowed the gap to 21-7 late in the third quarter when running back Micah Ford threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Elic Ayomanor.
After a Virginia Tech punt, Stanford had an opportunity to close the deficit further, but Keonta Jenkins intercepted a Lamson pass and returned it 13 yards to the Stanford 35, setting up Drones’ 2-yard touchdown run to seal the game.
John Love added a 46-yard field goal with 2:33 left to complete the scoring.
The first half’s lone turnover played a key role in giving Virginia Tech its 14-point lead at the break. Following a missed Stanford field goal, the Hokies marched 65 yards in seven plays, capped by Stephen Gosnell’s 9-yard touchdown reception from Drones.
Stanford responded with a methodical 47-yard drive, but Lamson fumbled at the Virginia Tech 2-yard line, and Antwaun Powell-Ryland recovered. The Hokies then extended their lead to 14-0 after a series of punts, with Tuten scoring on a 7-yard run.
