SHOCK!!! 3 Biggest Disappointments for the Auburn Tigers

Hugh Freeze continues to group Auburn football’s “Freeze Four” together and frequently receives questions about the collective group. During an appearance at the 68 Ventures Bowl 1st & 10 Club in Mobile on October 7, Freeze praised the quartet, describing them as a potentially “special” core (h/t AL.com).

“They’re freshmen,” Freeze said of the Freeze Four. “They’re incredibly talented and are starting to understand how the game needs to be played against some of the elite athletes in the secondary at other schools.

“We’re very excited about their future. I think all four — Bryce, Cam, Perry, and Malcolm — have huge potential and could become really, really special players.”

So far, Malcolm Simmons has been the standout of the group. After six games, he’s established himself as Auburn’s No. 2 receiver, with 18 catches for 260 yards and two touchdowns.

Cam Coleman has faced a shoulder injury but still managed 212 yards on just nine catches, including a Week 1 touchdown. While his ceiling is considered the highest, he’s experienced some early challenges, such as missed blocks in the 31-13 loss to Georgia.

On the other hand, Perry Thompson and Bryce Cain have had minimal impact since Auburn’s 73-3 blowout win over Alabama A&M, with a combined total of six catches for 156 yards this season.

Hugh Freeze backtracked on having open WR rotation for Auburn football

Hugh Freeze talked about Auburn football's in-state freshman quartet on October 7

Freeze initially promised his entire wide receiver room extended opportunities in 2024, with plans for an open rotation. However, those plans quickly shifted as the season unfolded.

Given how efficiently his offense moves down the field, Freeze doesn’t need to justify the change, especially considering the real issue has been turnovers, not the offensive scheme.

What Freeze does need to focus on is ensuring he doesn’t alienate his standout receivers from the Class of 2024. Failing to follow through on his earlier promise could risk losing some of these key talents.
