As the 2024-25 season approaches, the primary concern regarding Joseph Woll has been his health and whether he can complete the season without significant injuries. His young career has already been hampered by injuries, which have occurred at inopportune times, such as at the end of Game 6 in last year’s playoff series against Boston.
The Toronto Maple Leafs placed considerable faith in the 26-year-old this summer, envisioning him as the 1A goaltender alongside Anthony Stolarz’s 1B. Unfortunately, just before the season opener, Woll suffered a lower body injury that landed him on injured reserve.
With the Leafs starting the season with three games in four days, their schedule has eased up a bit, featuring only two home games this week. Earlier today, head coach Craig Berube shared positive updates about Woll, noting that he is feeling better and participated in on-ice activities before Leafs practice. He is expected to join the team for practice soon.
His status moving forward remains uncertain. However, with a lighter schedule this week, Woll has the opportunity to participate in a few more practices and could potentially make his return by the weekend. If the team opts to be cautious with their young goaltender, they might hold him out until next week.

In Woll’s absence, Anthony Stolarz and Dennis Hildeby have performed well, so there’s no immediate urgency to activate Woll, who will be eligible to come off injured reserve on Thursday. Once he returns, the Maple Leafs are likely to implement a fairly even timeshare in goal until either Woll or Stolarz proves they can take on a heavier workload.
