Eugene Asante was candid about Auburn football’s ongoing struggles but refrained from blaming head coach Hugh Freeze. Instead, he emphasized the responsibility of himself and his teammates for the team’s losses.
“I know it’s tough for the fans that the results aren’t there, but I trust the leadership of this team. I believe in coach Freeze and his vision,” Asante said (via AL.com). “With someone like him leading, good things can happen. The key is for us players to own our mistakes.”
Asante also noted that the bye week was well-timed, offering a chance to reset and urging fans to have faith in a potential turnaround.
“I think the bye week helped us refocus on what we need to do. We still have goals we want to achieve,” Asante said. “We’ve adjusted our goals, and we believe we can finish the season strong. I really believe once we win one, momentum will build. Confidence comes from winning, playing well, and putting out good tape. A win could ignite the spark this team needs right now.”
Eugene Asante never buried Auburn football’s head coach, even when it was Bryan Harsin
Eugene Asante, a recruit from Bryan Harsin’s second class, has shown admirable character by never criticizing the former Auburn head coach, who was widely unpopular. Despite being benched during the 2022 season under Harsin, after making an impact at UNC in 2020 and 2021 under Mack Brown, Asante didn’t use the opportunity to take shots at Harsin.
In 2023, Asante found success under Hugh Freeze, but he refrained from blaming Harsin for keeping him off the field. This level of professionalism and leadership is why Asante is considered a true Auburn man. While it’s easy to criticize public figures like Freeze or Harsin, Asante refuses to engage in that negativity, showing his commitment to leading with integrity.
