The Pittsburgh Steelers are asserting their dominance in the AFC North with a crucial victory over the New York Jets on Sunday Night Football. This win improves their record to 5-2, placing them at the top of the division, although a potential Baltimore win could create a tie. The Steelers are now on a two-game winning streak. A bold decision leading up to the game was starting Russell Wilson over Justin Fields.
This decision drew criticism from many Steelers fans and NFL analysts, as Fields had previously guided the team to a 4-2 record. However, Wilson’s performance demonstrated that he could offer more than Fields.
“We’re capable of a lot; we left a lot on the table,” Wilson stated after the game, according to Jori Epstein of Yahoo Sports, implying that the Steelers could have scored even more than the 37 points they managed.
Wilson also acknowledged Fields for his contributions, saying, “I also want to give credit to Justin, man. How he got us in this position. What a great player he is. Just this whole team.”
Steelers QB Russell Wilson shoots down narrative that he has negative relationship with Justin Fields
After the game, Russell Wilson reflected on the significance of being chosen as the starter by Mike Tomlin over the well-performing Justin Fields. He addressed the perception of rivalry between them, emphasizing the positive dynamic they share.
“We are in a tremendous situation where we are. I think there’s a lot of outside noise that makes it seem like it’s a negative thing, and this rivalry internal and it’s not, man, we just want to win,” Wilson said, according to ESPN’s Brooke Pryor.
Wilson further elaborated on his relationship with Fields, stating, “I mean we have a great relationship. He’s a tremendous quarterback, he’s a franchise quarterback, he’s a leader. He’s got all the intangibles, and whatever I can give to him and show him and just be around him, that’s part of my job.”
Additionally, Wilson praised Mike Tomlin’s leadership, saying, “Coach Tomlin believes in all of us and he does a tremendous job. This guy, he’s a tremendous football coach, and we trust him and we know who he is, and he’s very transparent in everything else with us too. So we just love winning. We just love being a part of the process.”
