The Cardinals have signed infielder/outfielder Ryan Vilade to a minor league deal, with a non-roster invitation to major league spring training. Vilade, represented by Icon Sports Management, will turn 26 in February and has brief MLB experience, appearing in three games for the Rockies in 2021 and 17 games for the Tigers in 2024. In 56 career big-league plate appearances, he holds a modest .157/.200/.216 slash line. Following the 2024 season, Vilade was outrighted by Detroit and chose free agency.
While his MLB stats are underwhelming, the Cardinals are likely more interested in his minor league track record. In 2024, Vilade played 108 Triple-A games, hitting .278/.346/.449 with a 105 wRC+ over 442 plate appearances, alongside 20 stolen bases. Defensively, he showcased versatility, playing all three outfield spots and multiple infield positions apart from shortstop.
Vilade was originally a second-round pick by the Rockies in 2017 and displayed strong performances in the lower minors, earning a spot in Colorado’s top 10 prospect rankings by Baseball America from 2018 to 2022. However, struggles at Triple-A in 2021 and 2022 led to his placement on waivers. After brief stints with the Pirates and another underwhelming Triple-A season in 2023, Vilade signed with the Tigers for 2024, where he found some success at the Triple-A level.
For the Cardinals, 2025 is shaping up as a rebuilding year, with a focus on developing their talent pipeline rather than competing immediately. The team may entertain trades involving players with limited long-term value. Nolan Arenado, who turns 34 and desires a contender, could be moved. Other trade candidates include Brendan Donovan and Lars Nootbaar, who have three years of team control, and Nolan Gorman, who has four but may benefit from a fresh start elsewhere. Paul Goldschmidt has already departed via free agency.
Vilade’s versatility could make him a useful depth option as the Cardinals adjust their roster. With one remaining minor league option and minimal MLB service time, he could be a cost-effective asset for the future if he earns a roster spot.
