The 2024 season has been challenging for Daniel Jones, who recently joined the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad after being benched and released by the New York Giants. Jones has faced heavy criticism for his performance as quarterback, with one of the more notable critiques coming from Tom Brady during the Giants’ 27-20 Thanksgiving Day loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Brady accused Jones of “giving up on New York” after his benching, despite Jones reportedly staying involved with the team, even serving as the scout team safety before his release.
These comments sparked backlash, including from former Giants star Tiki Barber. Speaking on Evan & Tiki, Barber defended Jones and questioned Brady’s understanding of the situation. “I don’t think [Brady’s] talked to anybody about this Daniel Jones situation,” Barber said. “I don’t think Tom is privy enough to the information he needs to be to have that conversation about Daniel Jones, and to criticize Daniel Jones like that. That’s just wrong of Tom.”
The circumstances around Jones’ departure from the Giants remain unclear, but Brady’s remarks have drawn significant criticism for potentially mischaracterizing the situation.
Tiki Barber believes that Tom Brady lacks sufficient information to criticize Daniel Jones so harshly, suggesting that Brady’s limited involvement in Fox’s production meetings due to his minority ownership of the Las Vegas Raiders may have contributed to his ill-informed comments. Barber pointed out that both Jones and the Giants share responsibility for their failed partnership. While Jones did not perform well enough to justify continuing as the starting quarterback, New York also failed to provide him with adequate offensive talent before moving on from him.
While opinions on the situation may vary, Barber is frustrated that Brady chose to publicly criticize Jones in front of a national audience without fully understanding the circumstances. At this point, Barber feels that the most important thing for Jones is whether he can succeed with his new team, the Minnesota Vikings.
