New York Giants cornerback made a memorable impact in Week 14, securing his first interception of the season in a 14-11 loss to the New Orleans Saints. However, the rookie’s breakout moment was cut short, as he suffered a fractured lumbar spine during the game, according to Dan Duggan. The injury is expected to end Hawkins’ season, with just four games remaining and the Giants having little to play for.
Sunday marked only Hawkins’ second game of the season, as he had been inactive for most of the year. He previously saw action in Week 7 against the Philadelphia Eagles but earned his first start in Week 14 due to injuries to starting corners Deonte Banks and Dru Phillips and the release of Nick McCloud. Despite the Giants’ depleted roster, Hawkins capitalized on his opportunity, logging six tackles, an interception, and two passes defended. His performance helped keep the Saints’ offense in check, limiting quarterback Derek Carr to 219 passing yards on 31 attempts and stifling New Orleans’ ground game.
Hawkins’ injury comes at an unfortunate time, as it halts his progress during a season where opportunities were scarce. Still, his strong physical attributes—size, speed, and strength—and flashes of potential suggest he remains a promising part of the Giants’ future plans. With a presumed full recovery, Hawkins’ role in the organization should remain secure under general manager Joe Schoen, who selected him in the draft.
In the meantime, the Giants will look to younger contributors like Art Green and Greg Stroman to step into the void, as they prepare for a challenging Week 15 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens.
