The New York Mets have acquired Juan Soto, but what’s next for their roster? With a need to address first base following Pete Alonso’s departure, the Mets could explore creative solutions. Although the first base market is limited, they might consider acquiring a third baseman and shifting Mark Vientos to first. One intriguing option is St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado, who recently included the Mets on his list of teams he’d waive his no-trade clause for.
Thomas Gauvain of Redbird Rants proposed a blockbuster trade to bring Arenado to New York. Here’s the suggested deal:
New York Mets receive:
- 3B Nolan Arenado
- $15 million
St. Louis Cardinals receive:
- RHP Jonah Tong
“The Mets just landed the offseason’s top prize in Juan Soto, reinforced their rotation, and may not be finished yet,” Gauvain explained. “Brett Baty is currently projected as the Mets’ 2025 third baseman, but after a rough 2024 season at the plate and inconsistent defense, Arenado would represent a major upgrade at third base.”
Arenado’s elite defense, paired with Francisco Lindor at shortstop, would solidify the left side of the infield and elevate the Mets’ contention in 2025. If Alonso isn’t re-signed, the Mets could turn to the trade market to address their corner infield needs.
For the Cardinals, the trade offers financial relief by shedding over $30 million of Arenado’s remaining $52 million contract. It also brings in Jonah Tong, a promising young pitcher with a dominant fastball. Meanwhile, the Mets could enhance their World Series aspirations without overspending, as this deal—with the Cardinals covering part of Arenado’s salary—would be more cost-effective than pursuing Alex Bregman or re-signing Alonso. It would also free up resources for New York to invest further in their starting rotation.
