The New York Giants have shown they can play some of the worst football in the league, with their most recent loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, 34-7. This marked quarterback Drew Lock’s third start for the Giants, and it was his worst performance yet. After being passed over for Tommy DeVito in Week 12 and sidelined by injury in Week 15, Lock struggled, completing just 22 of 39 passes for 210 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. He was sacked three times, fumbled once, and was unable to contribute much with his legs. His performance, which resulted in a -23.7 expected points added, was among the worst in the league.
On Monday, head coach Brian Daboll revealed that Lock underwent an MRI on his right shoulder after the game. Daboll stated that the MRI results were still pending, but that Lock’s shoulder could be just sore, as is typical after a game. However, given his poor performance and the injury concern, it may be time to consider other options like DeVito or Tim Boyle for the starting role.
The Giants are in a tough spot, with a lack of offensive firepower and a defense missing its top player. The team signed Lock as a backup, fully aware of the variability he brings, but Daboll seems to prefer quarterbacks who can execute the game plan effectively. Lock’s performance did not meet that standard, and the Giants may have to move on from him, especially as the season winds down and the first overall pick in the 2024 draft becomes a likely possibility.
It remains unclear whether Lock will be healthy enough to play in Week 17 against the Indianapolis Colts, but for now, the Giants have not decided on a starting quarterback. As the losses continue to mount, the identity of the starter may become less significant as the team focuses on securing the top pick.
