The Virginia Tech football team is in Charlotte preparing for Friday night’s Duke’s Mayo Bowl against Minnesota. Head coach Brent Pry led a nighttime practice on New Year’s Eve, followed by an afternoon session on New Year’s Day at a local high school.
The Hokies’ roster will look significantly different on Friday compared to the team that secured bowl eligibility with a 37-17 victory over Virginia during Thanksgiving Weekend. Several players have opted out, either entering the transfer portal or focusing on the NFL Draft. Meanwhile, some recruits from the 2025 class, signed during the early signing period, have joined the team for bowl practices.
Nine Virginia Tech football recruits taking part in bowl practice
The incoming Class of 2025 at Virginia Tech has generated some excitement, and nine of the recruits are practicing with the Hokies to get a head start on next season. This is critical for this class since they may have to play a larger role next season than some entering rookies have in previous years.
Notable players practicing with the team include Jeff Overton Jr., Jahmari DeLoatch, and Micah Matthews. Overton, a running back highly regarded by the coaching staff, is expected to make an impact next season despite competition from the returning young backs and two new transfers.
All of these players are likely to attend Friday night’s game at Bank of America Stadium, where the Hokies will face the Gophers. Virginia Tech aims to avoid finishing the season with a losing record after starting the year with high expectations. Despite being short-handed, the game offers an exciting opportunity to watch Pop Watson and other young talents showcase their skills on a big stage.
